History of plant

Main events in the history of OJSC źSelenginsky pulp and cardboard mill╗.

The construction of źSelenginsky pulp and cardboard mill╗ started in 1959 on the ground where the construction of a pulp and viscose plant had been carried out earlier (from 1956 to 1959)

The choice of the place for the construction of the mill on the Selenga River was determined by the sufficient forest raw material resources in republic, the lack of wood at the customersĺ place, the developed transport network, availability of construction materials and proximity of the coalfield.

In April,1959, the State Planning Committee of the USSR and the Council of Ministers of RSFSR submitted proposal to the Council of Ministers of the USSR to change the profile of Selenginsky plant to manufacturing of a container board. Thus, the necessity of construction of the plant for sawmilling and woodworking wastes disposal in Lake Baikal basin has been proved.

The plant was built in extremely hard conditions connected with the seismic activity in the area of construction (up to 9 points). While constructing the main building, there were excavated more than 289446 m3, driven 21174 piles, erected 11394 tons of steelworks, put 1092 tons of aluminum panel, set 52725m2 of glass. These figures indicate both the huge project size and how much energy, work and insistence was invested into the construction of the plant. This project was declared as a Top-Priority Soviet Komsomol Project.

In 1975-1977, in collaboration with the colleagues from Russian Research Institute of Pulp and Paper Industry in Astrakhan, the specialists of the plant have been testing the method of pulping and getting the cardboard for the flat layers of corrugated cardboard made of mixed wood with the addition of 50% of larch.

The basis of cardboard production at the plant is pulping which produces 95000 tons of unbleached sulfate pulp a year.

The plant has 10 digesters with the capacity of 140 cubic meters each.

On December,31,1976, recycling plant was accepted for operation. It recycled pulping by-products into tall products. Now, it is a department of wood chemical and paint products.

In October,1977, the cardboard machine (KDM-2) was put into operation, it produced wrapping paper and fluting as well as cardboard K-1

The recycling plant of pulping by-products into tall products was put into operation in 1977 and designed for recycling both the products of Selenginsky pulp plant and Baikalsky pulp plant. The main manufacturing equipment was domestically made.

On October,11,1977, the first production lot of wrapping paper, fluting and cardboard K-1 was produced by the cardboard machine (KDM-2)

During the late 70ĺs, as major focus, facing the plant team was national plan performance and products quality upgrading.

In 1980, the plant has realized the state plan for the first time, since 1987 it has been realizing it consistently, as well as contract supplies.

In 1984, paints and vanishes line production was opened. Its first product was a tall oil varnish. In 1989, the production of the following products has been started: varnish PF-283, PF-053, enamel PF-223, PF-266. Wood chemical and paints and vanishes department produces rosin, tall acids, distilled tall oil (DTO), varnish, oil varnish, enamels. The department works with high profitability, it produces high quality and highly demanded products.

1980-1990 became the years of stable work of the plant. During this period, a large amount of work was performed, such as innovation of cardboard machines by transferring them to synthetic fabric, reducing of dust and gas emissions, introduction of a closed system of water circulation, having no equals anywhere in the world.

On August,1,1990 the plant stopped disposal of waste water into the Selenga river.

New economic factors and container board demand contraction made the plant follow the way of diversification. A plant set a course for deeper recycling, resulting in construction of corrugated packaging department with a capacity of 30 million m2 per year in a very short time and the further expanding capacities up to 60 million m2 per year.

On October,21,1992 the department of corrugated packaging produced its first product. A new line allowed recycling the large part of cardboard, keep it for further recycling and produce the final product-corrugated packaging. This fact in its turn gave the opportunity to push up sales and expand product nomenclature.

In 1992, the line of corrugated packaging production ZBJ-1600, slitting machine #1, cross-link section, center of waste disposal work at the plant, the production of starch size has been successfully developed.

In October,1992, due to the economic reform, the plant was transformed into an open joint stock company źSelenginsky pulp and cardboard mill╗.
